South Africa vs Sri Lanka: Marco Jansen claims 11-86 as hosts win Durban Test

Marco Jansen recorded a match figure of 11-86 as South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 233 runs in the opening Test in Durban.

The left-handed batsman who won 7-13 as Sri Lanka won in the first innings bowled for 42 – their lowest total in Test cricket – reached 4-73 in the second over.

Sri Lanka continued at 101-5 in search of an unlikely score of 516 and were dismissed for 282 with more than four sessions to go at Kingsmead.

“I always dreamed of taking five wickets, but I never thought I would take ten,” said Jansen, whose previous best match figures were 7-91.

“It is every bowler’s dream and we are working for it. It will be hard to beat.”

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal, 29, who was not out overnight, made 83, Dhananjaya de Silva 59 and Kusal Mendis 48, but the tourists lost their last four wickets for 11 runs.

South Africa moves up to second place World Test Championship rankings and wins in their final three Tests would secure a place in the June final.

The second Test against Sri Lanka begins on December 5 in Gqeberha.
