WBBL 2024: Melbourne Renegades beat Brisbane Heat to win first title

West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews scored 69 and took two wickets as the Melbourne Renegades beat the Brisbane Heat to win the rain-marred Women's Big Bash League final.

The Renegades won by seven runs using the DLS method, securing their first silver title in the tournament's 10th season.

Matthews led their attack, hitting runs off 61 balls before being dismissed in the last over as her side scored 141-9.

Rain began to fall in the fourth over of the Heat's chase when they were 15-2 when the covers were put on at the Melbourne cricket Ground.

Their innings was reduced to 12 overs and Heat were set a revised target of 98 runs to win.

But Georgia Redmayne was out on 16 soon after the restart before Matthews removed Charli Knott and Laura Harris in successive balls.

Captain Jess Jonassen did her best to get them over the finish line with 44 out of 28 games unbeaten, but Heat finished the game 90-6, suffering their second consecutive WBBL final defeat.

“It's pure elation. It's been a long ten years with the Renegades, with lots of ups and downs,” said Melbourne captain Sophie Molineux.

“It just went so well this year. I'm just really happy for everyone involved. It means a lot to me.”
