The Washington Commanders dropped the white flag on their 2023 first-round pick late last week, releasing 23-year-old Emmanuel Forbes.
A former 16th overall pick, Forbes appeared in just 20 games (seven starts) over the last two seasons, recording 45 tackles (37 solo), 12 passes defended and two interceptions. He earned a Pro Football Focus grade of 50.9 as a rookie, but only earned a grade of 35.4 this year.
Forbes struggled to make the NFL transition and his time in Washington proves that. He was poor in coverage and even worse as a tackler, likely due to his size (6-foot-1, 180 pounds).
But should the New York Giants still be interested?
Maybe Forbes needs a fresh start in a new location, and the Giants certainly have holes at cornerback. Deonte Banks has been unconvincing and there is little outside depth other than him.
rookie Andru Phillips made an immediate impact, while Cor'Dale Flott asserted himself in an unexpected role. Veteran Adoree' Jackson appears to have little left in the tank.
The Giants need strength at the position and should Forbes clear waivers at 4 p.m. ET on Monday, he could become an interesting, low-cost option.
If the team can sign Forbes to a league minimum contract, they could evaluate him in the final five weeks of the season to determine whether he is worthy of a new contract or even a reserve/futures contract.
General manager Joe Schoen hasn't made many sound personnel decisions, but getting Forbes out of the way at minimal cost seems like a low-cost, potentially worthwhile signing.
