The San Francisco 49ers will be without their top two running backs for the remainder of the regular season after both rushers suffered injuries on Sunday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills.
While speaking to members of the media on a conference call on Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Christian McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury against the Bills. Shanahan said McCaffrey's injury will not require surgery, but his recovery time will be about six weeks. Shanahan said the 49ers would place McCaffrey on injured reserve.

McCaffrey had a strong start to the game against the Bills, rushing for 53 yards on seven carries before exiting the game with a knee injury. McCaffrey missed the first eight weeks of the season with an Achilles tendon injury. In four games, McCaffrey has rushed for 202 yards on 50 carries.
In addition to McCaffrey, fellow running back Jordan Mason will also be added to the injured reserve. Shanahan revealed that Mason had suffered a severe ankle sprain, forcing him to break back to the injured reserve.

Mason was a starter at the start of the season while McCaffrey struggled with an Achilles tendon injury. Mason took over the 49ers backfield with aplomb, rushing for 789 yards and three touchdowns during the 2024 season.
With both McCaffrey and Mason out, rookie rusher Isaac Guerendo will likely take over the 49ers' backfield. The fourth-round pick from Louisville ran for 246 yards on 42 carries and two touchdowns, including a 15-yard rushing touchdown against the Bills.
The Chicago Bears travel to Santa Clara on Sunday for a game against the 49ers.
