The Indianapolis Colts will rely on quarterback Anthony Richardson for the remainder of the 2024 NFL season, coach Shane Steichen announced Wednesday.
This represents a turnaround from two days ago, when Steichen said Joe Flacco would start in Week 11 against the New York Jets. Indianapolis has decided to start Richardson for the remainder of the season instead.
“We made it very clear to him that he was our quarterback in the future.” Steichen said before the Colts practiced Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Richardson got off to a 3-3 start at the start of the year. He completed 44.4% of his passes for 958 yards with four touchdowns against seven interceptions. Richardson also ran 41 times for 242 yards and a touchdown.
The 39-year-old Flacco went 1-3 as a starter in the last four weeks. The veteran completed 66.5% of his passes for 1,167 yards with nine touchdowns against five interceptions.
Indy's decision could have an impact on the Denver Broncos (5-5), while the Colts (4-6) are competing for a wild card spot in the AFC playoffs. Denver hosts Indianapolis on Dec. 15 at Empower Field at Mile High in Week 15.
