Last week, the Seattle Seahawks and their fans got quite a shock on Friday afternoon. Shortly after it was announced that center Connor Williams would be out for the Week 11 game against the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Mike Macdonald made the announcement .
Williams was signed in the offseason and had started all nine games up to that point. He also played well, but in Weeks 8 and 9 his play dipped sharply and there were unusually high snaps past quarterback Geno Smith.
Macdonald didn't elaborate on why Williams decided to hang up his boots and call it a career, but we could gain some new insight this week. Smith was recently at the and Sherm mentioned it as a situation that surprised him. Smith gave Sherm a thoughtful response about his former teammate.
Here's some more information about why Connor Williams retired:

Given the glamor and fame associated with professional sports, particularly the National Football League, it can be easy to forget that the players we see on television aren't demigods. Or comic book superheroes. Or video game characters. They are real people with real problems, concerns and interests. They are well compensated, but all the money in the world can't buy peace of mind or fix psychological problems.
Whatever the situation may be for Connor Williams, we hope he can find that peace and weather whatever storm he faces in his own life. Hopefully the decision to turn my back on football was the right one.
