Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway likes what he saw Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix this season.
“I’m happy for him,” Elway said in a recent interview with Broncos Wire about Dupuytren's contracture and its treatment. “I’m happy for the Broncos and the Broncos fans out there. It's been a pretty long dry spell and I think everyone is excited to see what's going on there. Obviously that is new ownership group is great, with Sean Payton as head coach and then of course we're hiring Bo Nix, who I think Sean really likes and of course everyone likes now because we've seen him develop over the first eleven weeks of the season.
“It's exciting to watch. But I think it's a combination of both in that Bo Nix has great talent. He is very mature. He made 60 starts in college, which I think really helped him.
“But I think more important is the way Sean and (quarterbacks coach) Davis Webb handle him. They don't put her in situations he can't handle. They're slowly progressing him and getting him to understand the NFL game, which is a big jump from the college game, and I think the whole combination of what's going on there comes through in Bo's game.
“He has the ability; Sean and Davis put him in situations he can handle, and those situations are becoming more and more common every week. And that's why, as you know, there are no limits to him. He'll just keep getting better.
“And as long as Vance Joseph keeps that defense going and keeps (Nix) in games week in and week out, the quarterback can also grow at his own pace and win football games as well.”
Nix has broken several franchises (and NFL) records this season and surpasses several previous records set by Elway in his rookie year. Does Elway feel guilty about his records falling?
“I don’t,” Elway said, laughing. “You know what? I'm glad he's breaking them because it was my rookie year, we weren't very good, so it's nice to see he got off to a better start than me. And I think that's it a good sign for all the Bronco fans out here to be able to look at this and know that they really have someone to build around now because you know the quarterback position is so important in the NFL and it looks like they've found their man [he will] Keep growing, bring that excitement back and start fighting for those world championships again.”
John Elway spoke with Broncos wire in a three-part interview this week. Elway talked about Dupuytren's contracture Part 1. Stay tuned for Part 3 with Elway's assessment of Denver's playoff chances this season.
