The Chargers and Ravens meet this Monday night, marking the third time Jim and John Harbaugh have faced off.
The last time the two brothers competed was nearly 12 years ago at Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome in New Orleans, LA, when Jim was head coach of the 49ers.
The Ravens, led by quarterback Joe Flacco, started with a strong first half and led 21-6 at halftime. With the score at 28-6, a power outage put America's biggest sporting event on hold for more than thirty minutes.
Shortly thereafter, the 49ers responded with 17 unanswered points in the second half, including a 31-yard touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick, to make the score 28-23. After the two-minute warning, San Francisco trailed 34-29, but a turnover on downs followed by an intentional safety cost them the game.
Baltimore won 34:31. Flacco finished the game with three touchdown passes and Jacoby Jones returned a kickoff 108 yards for a score.
“This loss was hard, but upon reflection and time, it is my brother and best friend,” Jim said. “I’m really proud of him and happy about his success. It was deserved.”
After nine seasons in the college ranks and leading the Michigan Wolverines to the national championship, Jim returned to the NFL and had another opportunity to beat his brother for the first time.
“When I walked off the field in that Super Bowl, I felt like there was going to be another day. And then it didn't come again for many years and it looked like I wouldn't have a chance for another day,” Jim added. “But by the grace of God I’m back and back on a team that has a chance.”
