Biggest takeaways from the Week 12 loss

One of the biggest stories for the 2024 Panthers was their worst defense in the league. However, in recent weeks, they have started making key stops late in games to give their offense a chance.

But that fortune ran out on Sunday.

While it's difficult to criticize any defense playing quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, the lack of talent and discipline was evident all afternoon. One of the biggest plays of the game was the Chiefs' game-winning drive, when Mahomes broke away to a 33-yard gain and secured best field position for the walk-off field goal.

Offseason newcomer and cornerback Dane Jackson became the face of the team's defensive woes. Not only does it look like he's out of position at nickel, but his play has been subpar, with poor pursuit angles, tackles and coverage discipline. It might be time to give Caleb Farley a look at nickel.

On the bright side, guys like linebacker Josey Jewell and pass rushers Jadevon Clowney and DJ Wonnum were solid against the Chiefs, as the three combined for 3.5 sacks. It looks like the Panthers are finding a pass rush — but their quarterback containment skills, rush defense and run support haven't improved enough to warrant optimism for this unit moving forward.
