In theory, the best players are selected in the first picks of the NBA draft, and usually the first picks live up to expectations. However, sometimes they turn out to be busts, while the real superstars are taken in later rounds.

Every Season Of Michael Jordan’s NBA Career, Ranked
Michael Jordan is arguably the best basketball player of all time. How did he perform in each of his 15 NBA seasons?
It feels weird to see some of the biggest players of all time chosen outside the first 10 picks in a draft, and even some of them outside of the top 20. These NBA players fell off teams’ draft lists because scouts didn’t see much potential in them, but these guys ended up proving everyone wrong.
UPDATE: 2024/11/23 21:00 EST BY JOEY HAVERFORD
The NBA draft changes each year with all the teams having deep scouting staffs for players at every level in the United States and internationally. It becomes harder to find a draft day steal each year with every team having employees designed to find the most successful players. Any NBA star to get that title of a draft steal deserves credit for exceeding expectations.
Teams to take the chance on developing or making these players part of their core benefited from the talent delivering. NBA franchises must have some of these hits to become NBA Champions or contenders for a title. Each draft steal should be viewed in depth to see just all they accomplished in the NBA.

The Los Angeles Clippers have struggled to compete for most of their franchise’s history since moving to L.A. Fans loved the duo of Chris Paul and Blake Griffin taking the Clippers to new relevance before falling short of winning an NBA Championship.
DeAndre Jordan ended up being the third most important player on that team after getting drafted 35th overall in the second round. One All-Star appearance and three All-NBA selections saw Jordan’s defense and rebound making him a premiere center in the league during his prime.

Isaiah Thomas might be the greatest underdog story in NBA history as he was selected as the 60th and final overall pick of the 2011 Draft by the Sacramento Kings. Everyone could see Thomas was a great scorer in college, but scouts were concerned over his shorter 5’9’’ height.
Thomas proved all his doubters wrong by becoming a strong scorer for Sacramento and Phoenix. However, it was the All-Star run with the Boston Celtics that made him an all-time great draft steal. Thomas averaged 28.9 points for Boston during his best season and finished fifth in MVP voting.

The Los Angeles Lakers took a gamble on drafting Marc Gasol in the 2007 NBA Draft with the 48th overall pick in the second round. Marc didn’t join the NBA right away, but they felt drafting his rights would be valuable for them when he did make the jump.
Fate would see the Lakers trading the rights to Marc and other pieces to the Memphis Grizzlies for his brother Pau Gasol. Even though Pau helped the Lakers win two rings, Marc was the franchise player for Memphis. The trade acquiring a late pick saw him coming over and winning the Defensive Player of the Year Award as a top center in the league.

Haliburton is having a brilliant career. He had a phenomenal 2023/24 season, in which he was Assists Champion with 10.9 assists per game, recording 20.1 points per game, and he is, in theory, far from reaching his peak. And to make matters worse, that year there were several draft busts, like Derrick Williams, Enes Freedom, Tristan Thompson, Jan Veselý or Bismack Biyombo.
Butler has had a great career, and in recent years has proven to be one of the most clutch players in the NBA. Butler knows how to steal the show in the Playoffs and how to lead his team to victory, although he has yet to win a championship ring.
