  1. To everybody asking why the referee didn’t “restart” after Frazers back was to Wardley:

Refs only separate a taken back, if both fighters are in the clinch, with one actively threatening back of the head shots. What usually happens, is that both clinch with each other, one manages to maybe duck below the other guys arm, and finds himself on the guys back, usually still holding the other guy with one arm and maybe already trying to throw punches with the other, in which case the ref HAS to step in, as there’s an immediate danger of illegal blows to the back of the head.

In this fight, Clarke was trying to push Wardley into the robes to smother his offense, he was already hurt after all and looking to reset and buy time by forcing a clinch exchange. Wardley, however, managed to slip under Clarke’s left, which sent Clarke into the ropes because of his own momentum, and then didn’t engage immediately, but instead backed away, giving Clarke enough time to turn, and not getting the referee involved.

The first rule of boxing is still “protect yourselves at all times” though, and refs usually only tell fighters “don’t turn around” after seeing them do it a couple times. The ref in the Zhang vs Wilder fight wasn’t just going to stop the fight just because Wilder was dumb enough to spin.
