Super flyweight contender John “Scrappy” Ramirez (14-1, 9 KOs) avenged his only career loss as a professional on December 14th by earning a 10-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Ephraim Bui (10-1) at Toyota , 8 KOs) hit Arena in Ontario, California.

Looking back, “Scrappy” has gained invaluable experience against Jimenez to become even more dangerous at super flyweight, and he is taking it one fight at a time until he gets another fight for the world title.
“It felt good to be back in the ring,” said the charismatic Ramirez. “It's been a while since I last stood in the bright lights and I enjoyed every second of my strike looking out at the crowd. The fight went according to the game plan and I'm glad I executed it, using my jab to the body in the early rounds and increasing my punches later. I didn't stop on the ropes; I was told to always use my feet for defense.
“2025 will be a big year for me. I had the chance to show my skills in this fight. I think it was best for me to do 10 laps to gain my experience. As I left the ring, I asked Eric Gomez (President of Golden Boy Promotions) to keep me busy in 2025 because I need a big year to keep this momentum going and capitalize on it and win a world title. I felt a little ring rust, but that's gone now. I’ll take it one fight at a time and the chance for my world title will arise.”
Despite a limited amateur career and fighting a former gold medalist at the 2018 USA Nationals in Bui, “Scrappy” boxed his way to victory as all three judges scored the fight in his favor, each scoring a score of 97-93.
“Everyone has to change all the time,” said Ramirez, 26, explaining his change in style. “I am still evolving as a fighter and person, both in and out of the ring. I would like a rematch (with Jimenez) because it would feel good to avenge my only loss, but if he isn't interested I would fight one of the other world champions (WBC Jesse “Bam Bam” Rodriguez, WBO Phumelele) . “Scrappy” is ranked No. 2 in the world by the WBA, behind only future Hall of Famer Roman Gonzalez (52-4, 42 KOs), and No. 15 by the WBC.
