Nigel Benn admits he would like to help Anthony Joshua on his road to recovery after defeat to Daniel Dubois.
Joshua was dropped four times en route to a devastating blow Loss in the fifth round to IBF heavyweight champion Dubois at Wembley Stadium in September.
“AJ” was ruled out of an immediate rematch with the 27-year-old as he needed more time to recover from injuries sustained in the fight.
Benn, a former two-weight world champion, believes the Watford man is capable of bouncing back from his fourth professional defeat and says he would be willing to offer him some advice.
“I still believe Anthony can come back from this,” Benn continued In front.
“But he needs some mongrel.
“I know he has it in him.
“I would love to be in the gym with him.
“I'm not saying he lacks encouragement, but you've got to get that mongrel in you that I know is in you and I still think he can change that.”
The 35-year-old's promoter, Eddie Hearn has not ruled out a second match with Dubois, but admits his protégé will wait for the outcome of the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury on December 21 before deciding his next move.
“AJ” has already lost twice to Usyk, but a long-awaited all-British showdown with Fury is still to come.
Despite the lure of a potential meeting with “The Gypsy King” should he seek revenge against Usyk, Benn insists Joshua should seek to avenge his loss to Dubois before moving on to another opponent.
“I’m not giving up training or anything, but you have to have that hunger,” added the 60-year-old.
“But I don’t think he should go anywhere other than fight Dubois.”
Dubois will defend his title on February 22nd but remains without an opponent despite being closely linked to Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang.
The Londoner offered Jake Paul a shock opportunity to fight him after his win over Mike Tyson last Friday in Texas, with Paul posting a DM from the heavyweight champion.
