Oscar De La Hoya admits he is excited by the possibility of pitting WBA cruiserweight world champion Zurdo Ramirez against unified heavyweight king Oleksandr Usyk in the future.
Usyk, a former undisputed cruiserweight champion, has previously spoken of his desire Return to the division After his rematch with Tyson Fury on December 21 in Saudi Arabia, De La Hoya believes Ramirez would be an ideal opponent for him.
“I think after the rematch I might move down to cruiserweight,” the 37-year-old said The 3-knockdown rule Podcast.
“I want more [fights at] Cruiserweight.
“Maybe I can be undisputed for a second time at cruiserweight, that’s my plan.
“When I start preparing for my training camp [as a heavyweight]I have to eat all the time. It’s hard for me, I don’t like it.”
“Zurdo” captured the WBA title with a unanimous decision victory over Arsen Goulamirian in March, a win that made him two-weight world champion.
The Mexican, who is preparing for a unification clash with WBO titlist Chris Billam-Smith on November 16 in Riyadh, has recently spoken of his desire to move up to heavyweight to compete there the Ukrainian.
“Usyk is a small heavyweight, but a true champion,” said the 33-year-old Seconds later.
“I think it would be a good game.
“I watched him and followed him a lot and that’s one of my goals: to be undisputed at cruiserweight, then at heavyweight, and I would probably fight him at heavyweight.”
Golden Boy founder and CEO De La Hoya admits he is intrigued by the prospect of his protégé taking on the two-weight world champion.
“I’m not happy because he’s united,” the 51-year-old continued DAZN.
“Yeah, it's pretty exciting because it doesn't really happen that often.
“But the fact that Zurdo is talking about Usyk.
“And Usyk returns to cruiserweight.
“That’s pretty exciting.”
