They continued to pile up runs on the third day, increasing their partnership to 159 runs for the sixth wicket. Brook trudged back after scoring 171 off 197 balls with 15 boundaries and three maximums.
Chris Woakes followed suit, scoring just one run. At the other end, Stokes found support in the form of Gus Atkinson. The duo added 63 runs for the eighth wicket before Gus departed after chipping on 48 off 36 balls. 40 runs later, England captain Stokes was outclassed by Matt Henry and he ended his innings with a strong 80 from 146 balls.

With free license to go all out against the New Zealand bowling attack, Brydon Carse remained unbeaten with 33 off 24, complemented by two boundaries and three maximums. Shoaib Bashir's wicket ended England's batting defense and they ended their innings at 499 with a lead of 151 for New Zealand to clear and score.
New Zealand lose six wickets on the third day
For New Zealand, Matt Henry claimed four wickets while Nathan Smith picked three. William O'Rourke and Tim Southee chipped in with one or two wickets. When New Zealand came out to bat, Brydon and Woakes sent the openers reeling while the hosts were reeling at 23/2. Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra put on a 41-run stand for the third wicket before the latter departed for 24 runs.

Williamson finished his knock with 61 off 86 and Tom Blundell went back for a one-ball duck and Glenn Phillips' stay ended with just 19 runs. For England, Carse and Woakes picked three wickets each. Daryl Mitchell and Nathan Smith are unbeaten on 31 and one respectively and the Kiwis lead by just four runs with the score at 155/6.
