Wankhede Stadium is one of the iconic stadiums in Indian cricket, which has hosted some of the legendary matches of international cricket. The 2011 World Cup final and the 2004 friendly against Australia were one of the tournament's key examples of historic successes being achieved at this stadium.
The Wankhede will celebrate its 50th anniversary on January 19 and events will begin on January 12 and will be hosted by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). The event will also feature some of Mumbai's legendary skippers including some legendary figures of the game who had a huge impact in the game. The former Mumbai captains are Sachin TendulkarSunil Gavaskar, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane, Dilip Vengsarkar and Diana Edulji as well as some homegrown legends from men's and women's cricket. MCA President Ajinkya Naik also spoke on the occasion and invited all the fans and legends to celebrate.

“On the occasion of the icon’s 50th anniversary Wankhede StadiumI warmly invite all cricket fans to take part in this momentous event. Our legendary heroes will join the celebrations and together we will pay tribute to the rich heritage of the Wankhede Stadium, which is a pride of Mumbai. Let’s make this celebration truly memorable,” Naik said as quoted by News 18.
The final match at the Wankhede was between India and New Zealand where the Kiwis created history by winning the last and final match of the series by 25 runs to win the three-match series 3-0. This was the first time a visiting team had beaten India in India since 2012 and was the first time India had been whitewashed at home after the series against South Africa in 2000.
