According to the latest developments regarding the Champions Trophy 2025The Pakistan cricket Board (PCB) has given in to adopting the hybrid model for the tournament, which was initially scheduled to be held entirely in Pakistan. However, there is a twist in the entire narrative.
According to the latest reports, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has stated that he will accept the continuation of the hybrid model only if all future ICC events are held in the country cricket-teams/india/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>India Pakistan's matches will be played somewhere other than India.
“The current situation is that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has stated that he will accept hosting the Champions Trophy in a hybrid model only if the board agrees that all ICC events will be run on the same system in future and Pakistan will not do so.” “India will play games,” said a close source, quoted by the Hindustan Times.
There were two other critical conditions that the source shared and that Naqvi is expected to finally clarify soon.
“Pakistan also wants the ICC board to increase its financial cycle share of revenue from 5.75% and Naqvi insists on this, but he has not asked for additional hosting fees. People say Naqvi was seeking time to return after discussions with the government, but we don't know if he went there with the support of the government and had already sought its approval to make his statement in the virtual meeting of the ICC board to make their point of view,” the source added.
Three major events in India by 2031
Notably, three men's events are scheduled to be held in India by 2031, the time frame required by the PCB. The 2026 T20 World Cup co-hosted with Sri Lanka, the 2029 Champions Trophy and the 2031 ODI World Cup co-hosted with Bangladesh are the three tournaments that India will have hosting rights. This latest update ensures that the PCB has softened its stance on their participation. There were previously reports that they would withdraw from the competition if the eight-team tournament did not take place Pakistan in its entirety.
Earlier, the BCCI had made it clear to the ICC that the Indian team would not travel to Pakistan for the tournament given the intense border crossings between the arch-rivals. The board meeting called by the ICC failed to reach consensus on the fate of next year's edition.
The tournament is currently scheduled to take place in Pakistan from February 19th to March 9th. The Champions Trophy 2025 will be Pakistan's first ICC tournament since co-hosting the 1996 World Cup.
