NEW DELHI: Amid widespread speculation that the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) would begin MS Dhoni's last appearance, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon is confirmed for his 18th season as seen in CSKis the list of retained players.
CSK retained five players including Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube and Matheesha Pathirana.
Dhoni, 43, agreed to a significant pay cut and signed for Rs. 4 crore for the 2025 season.
His stay falls under the “uncapped player” category after the Board of Control for cricket in India (BCCI) reintroduced a rule that allows teams to classify players as uncapped players if they have been with India for more than five years no longer represented.
CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan hinted at Dhoni's future and suggested that the former India captain intends to end his career at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, which coincides with Dhoni's statement in 2021 during a CSK victory celebration.
“As for Mahi bhai (brother), you know he keeps everything to himself. It only comes to light at the last moment. He knows the passion he has for CSK and also knows what he has and what he has also mentioned.” One of the interviews that he will play his last game in Chennai, we hope he will continue for CSK. As long as MS wants to play, the doors are open. Thanks to his commitment, I am sure he will always make the right decision,” Viswanathan said in a conversation with Ambati Rayudu on Provoke TV.
Dhoni, who led CSK since 2008, briefly joined the Rising Pune SuperGiants in 2016 and 2017 before handing over the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2024 season.
