Despite the exceptionally high hype leading up to the main event, Friday night's fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul Many who watched the fight between the 58-year-old boxing legend and the 27-year-old YouTuber were disappointed. The decisive victory for Paul was panned by critics, with CBS Sports' Brian Campbell that the event “felt like a huge waste of time.” And there were some who did much more than just waste their time.
Before the fight on Friday evening, UFC star Conor McGregor posted on his X account that he had bet $1 million on fights this weekend, first on a Tyson knockout and also on a Jon Jones win at UFC 309. After Tyson's loss, several media outlets noted that McGregor had deleted his post. and also deleted a post about Paul challenging Prichard Colon (who was paralyzed after suffering a brain injury in a 2015 fight) as his next opponent. To add insult to injury, McGregor was later called by Paul and challenged to an MMA fight.
Music superstar Drake also lost a significant amount of money in Friday night's fight when he revealed he had bet $355,000 that Tyson would beat Paul. Drake had placed his bet at +285, which would have netted him just over a million dollars if Tyson won. Of course, Drake is no stranger to sports betting and has become a notorious curse included.
While McGregor and Drake make the headlines among celebrities who bet wrong for Tyson-Paul, many others simply grumbled about the quality of the match, in which Tyson tired quickly and Paul won in a unanimous decision after eight rounds. Among those who expressed their dissatisfaction with the game including Terence Crawford, Magic Johnson, Trae Young, JJ Watt and others.
