It's fight week in the city. UFC returns to its annual trip to Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night, with one of the biggest fights of the year on the marquee. Heavyweight champion Jon Jones meets former defending champion Stipe Miocic in an epic clash between the two men considered the best heavyweight and light heavyweight champions in the promotion's history. There's also an exciting rematch in the co-main event.
Jones has been one of the promotion's best fighters for over a decade. However, the greatest light heavyweight champion in promotion history has only fought once since 2020 with injuries and a contract dispute keeping him inactive. Jones captured the heavyweight crown in his debut in the division in March 2023 with a quick submission victory over Ciryl Gane. Miocic, on the other hand, has experienced a similar level of inactivity since 2021 with just one fight. Miocic lost his title in a brutal knockout against Francis Ngannou.
The co-main event of UFC 309 is a five-round lightweight rematch between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler. The pair fought at UFC 262 in May 2021 for the vacant lightweight title, which Oliveira won by second-round TKO. The fight is particularly notable because Chandler will be absent for two years on the night of the fight, largely because he was waiting for a highly anticipated fight against Conor McGregor that fell through.
