The heavyweight championship is on the line on Saturday night when champion Jon Jones takes on two-time former champion Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 309. The action takes place at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York.
Jones is considered by many to be the sport's greatest fighter of all time. His light heavyweight record speaks for itself with title wins over some of the best fighters of the early UFC era. However, he continues to be plagued by long periods of inactivity in the public eye, as Jones has only had one fight in the last three years.
Elsewhere on the card, a lightweight rematch is scheduled between the top contenders as former champion Charles Oliveira takes on former Bellator king Michael Chandler. The two previously met in 2021 for the vacant strap at 155 pounds, with Oliveira overcoming an early shot from Chandler and scoring a second-round knockout for the championship. For the Brazilian it was the culmination of his incredible career as it was his ninth win in a row. Oliveira defended the title twice before finally meeting his opponent in current defending champion Islam Makhachev in October 2022. Chandler, on the other hand, hasn't seen much of the Octagon since 2022 as he waited for Conor McGregor to join him. After spurts of expecting the fight to happen, including during this year's International Fight Week, Chandler eventually moved on to stay active.
