Sébastien Ogier estimates that the teams will arrive at the start of the 2025 season of World Rally Championship “less prepared than ever” after the introduction of new tires and cars without hybrid engines.
The Frenchman prepares to start again a partial WRC campaign with Toyotawhich will begin this month with the usual opening test in Monte Carlo, an event in which he has a record of nine victories.
This week, the eight-time world champion took the wheel of the GR Yaris on its only day of testing before Monte Carlo to prepare for the asphalt testswhich will take place at the end of the month (January 23-26). It was the second time he had driven a non-hybrid Rally1, following a brief test in December at the Monza Rally Show, following the FIA's decision to abandon this propulsion for 2025 and 2026.
The Monte-Carlo event, which Ogier considers one of the most important of his sporting career, also coincides with their first competition with the new Hankook tires, which will debut this year. Given the changes facing rallying's senior class, the Frenchman believes the event could be decided by whoever adapts to it quickest.
“I think every year I say that Monte Carlo is never easy, even after many, many participations, and I always feel great respect at the start of this ordeal. In a way, you are afraid because you know that you will encounter conditions that you do not expect.” Ogier said.
“And with so many changes, to the tires and the car, it means that This year we will probably come here less prepared than ever, but I think that will be the case for almost everyone.. “Whoever adapts best will have a good opportunity.”
Although changes to the Rally1 regulations for 2025 and the new tire threaten to equalize to some extent, Ogier believes his experience in Monte Carlo could be crucial. His last victory was in 2023, after victories in 2009, 2014-2019 and 2021.. The Frenchman finished second last season behind Thierry Neuvilleultimately world champion.
“Ultimately, it's a tough rally where drivers and experience can often make the difference.“, he added. “Of course, we always hope to be competitive there and, ultimately, I always trust my feelings and that has never changed throughout my career, no matter what situation I find myself in, full-time or not.. I am here to give the best of myself. Hopefully this connection with this rally helps me feel good,” he concluded.
