Grizzlies beginner Cam Spencer broke his left thumb during practice with the Memphis Hustle of the G League on Thursday a press release from the team.
Spencer will require surgery to repair the fracture and will be reevaluated in three weeks, the Grizzlies said in their statement.
The 53rd overall pick in the 2024 draft, Spencer missed the first few weeks of his rookie season due to an ankle injury. Since returning to health in mid-November, he has appeared in 10 contests for Memphis, including eight of the team's last 14 games. He is averaging 4.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 12.5 minutes per game with a .429/.333/1.000 shooting line over the last eight appearances.
The Grizzlies also released an injury update on the veteran guard Marcus Smartwho was not reachable since December 21st due to a partial tear in the proximal extensor hood of his right index finger.
According to the club, Smart is making progress in his rehab and will now be considered on a week-to-week basis. That's a bit vague, but it does suggest that a return for the 30-year-old in January is still possible.
Injuries have been an issue for Smart since he was traded to the Grizzlies in the 2023 offseason. Last season he was only able to play in 20 games; in the 2024/25 season he has been limited to 18 games so far. In total, he has missed 82 of 120 regular season contests since arriving in Memphis.
