Cowboys QB fined for defensive effort vs Eagles LB also flagged

The Cowboys were defeated by the Eagles in Week 10, but two Dallas players lose a second time, six days later.

Backup quarterback Trey Lance and rookie linebacker Marist Liufau were fined by the league for plays during the team's 34-6 loss. it was announced on Saturday.

Lance's penalty strangely resulted from a defensive play by the passer after a change of possession. When Philadelphia safety Reed Blankenship returned Jake Ferguson's fumble early in the fourth quarter, Lance hit him near the Cowboys sideline and forced him out of bounds.

The NFL found that Lance misused his helmet to initiate the contact and fined him $22,511 for unnecessary incivility.

The play didn't draw much interest from officials at the time, but was notable to many because it nearly took out the already-injured Dak Prescott as he stood on the sideline, perhaps a little too close for most observers.

Liufau was fined $5,749, also for undue hardship, for a move that was in itself unusual. The rookie was seen grabbing the facemask of another linebacker, Philadelphia's Ben Van Sumeren, who was on the field as a backfield blocker in the Eagles' offense.

That altercation took place late on the second down and resulted in a penalty flag from the referees, the Cowboys' fifth of the game on Sunday.
