As the summer came to a close, the New York Giants ramped up the hype for their 100th season celebration.
It unveiled brand new retro jerseys designed to honor teams of the past, created documentaries and podcasts, released a list of the top 100 players in franchise history, and planned several other events.
But after 13 weeks, what happened in East Rutherford feels anything but a celebration.
The team is 2-10, there are calls to fire general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, captain Daniel Jones has been fired, fellow captains Dexter Lawrence and Andrew Thomas are out for the season, and several of the team's former stars are out Dominate the league.
It's more of a funeral and less of a party.
Things couldn't have been worse for co-owner John Mara. The Giants are a doormat; a laughing stock and the butt of every joke. It was a humiliation.
They are setting records, but not in a positive way. They recently became the first team in NFL history to go 11 straight games without an interception, an active streak they would be eager to end.
Unfortunately for Mara and these giants, things could only get worse Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post lays out.
A loss in the last five games – each as an underdog – would mean a winning percentage of .118, which would be the franchise's second-worst – ahead of the 1966 team, which was 1-12-1 (.107) and behind other two-win teams in 1947 , 1964, 1973 and 1974.
Winless in the NFC East for the first time. Since permanently joining the division in 1970, the Giants have finished last 14 times, but have never had to face what would happen if they lost to the Eagles in Week 18 and went 0-6 against their three rivals.
Winless at home for the first time since 1974, when they played in the Yale Bowl while awaiting construction of their first Meadowlands home. The 2003 and 1983 teams both went 1-7 at Giants Stadium.
For the first time since 1953, when there were only 12 franchises, the NFL had the fewest points scored.
As the late Billy Mays would say, “But wait! There’s more!”
The current seven-game deficit is the seventh-worst mark and is slowly approaching the three-game record of nine games in a row (1976, 2003-04 and 2019).
The Giants already hold the modern record (since 1933) for consecutive games without an interception of 11 or more. The 2018 49ers set the record for fewest interceptions in a season with two, and the Giants haven't had a team with fewer than six since the stat was first collected in 1940 (2022).
It's important to remember what Mara said before the start of the year about the 100th season celebrations.
“We are all excited. “A little nervous because we want to make sure the 100th season is successful,” Mara said, via Giants.com. “You want every season to be successful, but especially this one. There’s a lot of history behind these 100 years.”
How the mighty have fallen.
Leave it to the Giants to celebrate the century mark with arguably one of the worst seasons in franchise history.
