New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll officially announced the team's intention to make a move at quarterback moving forward during a Zoom conference call on Monday.
Daniel Jones will no longer be the starter and is relegated all the way down the depth chart to No. 3.
Drew Lock remains the primary backup, while third-stringer Tommy DeVito, who hasn't played a snap since preseason, will be named to the starting lineup starting this Sunday at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The changes may not be complete yet. Daboll hinted that there could be further lineup adjustments at other positions this week.
“Personnel groups are offensive or defensive, obviously much less where you only see the quarterback situation. But there will be different people coming in and going away, and we'll take a look at some of those people who have done good work since they've been here,” he said. “Maybe they didn’t have that many employees, or maybe we integrate them into some staff groups. That’s what we’re going to do here in the next few days as we prepare for Tampa: We’re going to decide where these guys fit in.”
Daboll didn't elaborate on those comments, but the reality is that there isn't much the team hasn't tried to do this season.
All six of the rookies they drafted have plenty of playing time under their belts, and injuries up and down the roster have also given a good portion of the backup players a chance to get on the field as well.
One possibility would be along the offensive line, where they could try to get rookie Jake Kubas even more work. Some changes could also be made at wide receiver, as Darius Slayton is likely to leave in free agency after the season.
