Bears receiver Rome Odunze walked into a small gymnasium at the Lake County Boys & Girls Club on Jan. 7 to loud cheering, screaming and clapping.
While Odunze became accustomed to such a welcome from fans at Soldier Field during his rookie season, receiving that greeting from more than 60 children just two days after completing his first NFL season was a meaningful moment for him.
What the students didn't know was that Odunze had traveled to Lake County that evening to surprise them with 25 new Microsoft Surface laptops.
“I had the blessed opportunity to work with Microsoft, the Bears and the Boys & Girls Club to surprise the children with 25 Microsoft Surface Laptops for their education,” said Odunze. “It reminded me of when I was growing up at the Boys & Girls Club and guests would come over. Those were always special times.”
“The opportunity to socialize with them and let off steam was great, just feeling their energy. There’s nothing better than children’s excitement about something new, something fresh, so it was a good experience.”
