Cleveland Browns cornerback Cameron Mitchell (29) tackles Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Brandon Powell (4) during the first half of an NFL preseason football game at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday, August 17, 2024 in Cleveland , Ohio, pack up.

After being selected in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft, Cameron Mitchell was a productive backup corner for the Browns. His rookie season was full of ups and downs after receiving more playing time than expected. In his second season he has made some progress at all levels. As a backup, he currently has an overall PFF grade of 63.5, ranking him 87th out of 205 possible cornerbacks in the NFL.

Cleveland needs to take a realistic look at the longevity of some of its future cornerbacks. Denzel Ward is a phenomenal player, but the amount of concussions he has suffered in his NFL career is concerning for his future. Mitchell receiving more experienced snaps is important for his development as a player and security in case players are injured or leave in free agency. Although he wasn't elite for the Browns, his improvement was a great sign of growth and future potential.
