North Carolina Football names Freddie Kitchens interim HC

The North Carolina Tar Heels parted ways with head coach Mack Brown last week and have finally named their interim coach: former Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens.

The former Browns joined the North Carolina football program in 2023 as running game coordinator and tight ends coach. He now takes on a much larger role with the Tar Heels, at least for one game.

Kitchens was rated as follows by athletic director Bubba Cunningham:

“…an incredible coach who is respected by our student-athletes and staff…He is committed to doing everything he can to lead our program through this transition and we appreciate his willingness to take on this role.”

After taking over as the Browns' interim offensive coordinator in 2018, Kitchens was named head coach in 2019. This tenure didn't last long as he was fired after a tumultuous season.

Now he gets a second chance to make a lasting impression.
