Bears contemplating changes ahead of showdown with Packers

The Green Bay Packers are past the bye week and are beginning to prepare for the Chicago Bears, who have lost three games in a row and are now considering big changes after Sunday's 19-3 loss to the New England Patriots.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus did not announce the plans Monday, but said there will be changes on either the coaching or personnel side.

“There will be changes and adjustments,” Eberflus said Monday. . “I won’t reveal these either at the moment. I'm not at this point in the process yet. Monday is a long day in terms of evaluating everything, in terms of lineups, in terms of coaching, in terms of how we need to get better at that coaching and how we need to get better at in-game communication during the game “We have to be game, after the game, before the game.”

The Bears managed just 142 yards and scored nothing more than a field goal in a demoralizing loss to the Patriots at Soldier Field in Week 10. Chicago's offense produced just 69 net passing yards, finishing with 1:14 left on third down.

Eberflus said the Bears will continue to use rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, who had nine sacks Sunday and has been sacked 18 times in the current three-game losing streak. After throwing four touchdown passes in a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars before the bye, Williams has completed just 50.5 percent of his passes without a touchdown pass over the last three games as the Bears have scored just 27 points total.

It's possible the Bears make changes to the playcalling situation – first-year offensive coordinator Shane Waldron has called plays – or to the lineup, either in terms of playing time for pass catchers or the layout of the offensive line. Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley must prepare for potentially new looks or personnel from an offense desperate for answers.

The Packers are coming off the bye and chasing their first division win of the 2024 season. Green Bay lost two home games early in the NFC North schedule – against the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions. Sunday's trip to Soldier Field will be the Packers' road division game of the season.

The Packers have won 10 straight games against the Bears and 15 of the last 16. Chicago's last win over Green Bay at Soldier Field came in 2018.

The Bears are on the ropes. The Packers are refreshed and looking to start a recovery in the second half. Can Matt LaFleur's team deliver the decisive blow to the Bears' faltering offense on Sunday in Chicago?
