The Green Bay Packers released rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd from injured reserve on Monday, but it's unclear how long Lloyd will remain on the 53-man roster following surgery .
The Packers had a vacant roster spot, so no corresponding move was necessary.
Lloyd, a third-round pick out of USC, originally went on injured reserve after injuring his ankle in Week 2. He was too and appeared to be on track to return to the roster ahead of Sunday's showdown against the Chicago Bears, but the internal issue kept Lloyd on injured reserve.
With Lloyd now activated, the Packers have two options: either keep him on the 53-man roster until he heals from appendicitis or place him back on injured reserve or the non-football illness list (NFI). and bring him back later the season.
Teams have placed players on the NFI list after appendicitis in the past, although it's unclear whether Lloyd would be eligible considering the issue was first identified at a team facility.
In 2022, left tackle David Bakhtiari underwent surgery for appendicitis and missed three games. A move to injured reserve would mean Lloyd would miss at least four more games.
Lloyd only appeared in one game this season. In the Packers' win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2, he carried six balls for 15 yards and caught one pass for three yards.
Expect another roster move with Lloyd this week.
