Justin Simmons Richie Grant open to re signing

Atlanta Falcons safety Jessie Bates III is one of the best defensive players in the NFL, but it's unclear who will start at the other safety spot in 2025. Justin Simmons and Richie Grant will enter free agency at the start of the new league year March 12.

Simmons, a former Pro Bowler, signed with the Falcons in August after being released by the Denver Broncos. The 31-year-old has recorded at least two interceptions in seven consecutive seasons. Grant was selected by the Falcons in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of UCF.

Both players are open to returning next season. Simmons said he enjoyed his time in Atlanta.

“The locker room is unique,” Simmons said. “There is really great leadership. This place is in really good hands.”

As for Grant, the former second-round pick lost his starting spot to Simmons last season but still found a way onto the field. Perhaps the Falcons would view him as the cheaper of the two options.

According to Josh Kendall of The Athletic, Grant would “love” to return to Atlanta next season. Outside linebacker Matthew Judon declined to discuss his future during exit interviews.

Chief Executive Officer Terry Fontenot spoke to the media on Thursday and said the team would look at everything. However, Kirk Cousins' future will likely impact what the Falcons do as a free agent.

Fontenot said he would be okay with Cousins returning as a high-priced backup next season, but that doesn't seem realistic.

The team could also pay attention to the draft for its next strong safety. Atlanta currently only has three draft picks, but Fontenot indicated the team would consider it trade back to purchase additional picks.
