appears one year after the announcement that the star quarterback would undergo thigh surgery at the end of the season.
While Prescott didn't expect to face him At AT&T Stadium next Monday night, there was speculation that the Dallas Cowboys could have a QB1 battle over the weekend.
That is no longer the case. Cowboys coach McCarthy announced Monday night that Cooper Rush would remain the starter for the single game on ESPN.
“We have a lot of confidence in Cooper,” McCarthy told reporters in Frisco. “When I stood here last week, everyone believes in him. How can you not trust the way he played? But that fumble and recovery attempt got off to a rocky start. I just felt like he never really got into the rhythm.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones continues said they are sticking with Cooper Rush at QB because “he gives us our best chance.”
Jones added that Sunday's loss to the Eagles was “out of character” for Rush. “He wasn’t the Cooper Rush we know. Something went wrong for us…

Rush, a longtime backup in Dallas, started Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The seventh-grader completed 13 of 26 passes for 45 yards and lost two fumbles while being sacked once.
Perhaps the most significant takeaway was that Dallas didn't score a touchdown in its first game without Prescott, who left in the fourth quarter of their Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
“Everyone has confidence in Coop,” offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. “Yesterday, too, it was certainly not our best offensive performance. It wasn't all him. We’re all involved in this.”
The Cowboys might have named Rush the starter, but that wasn't a given early in the fourth quarter. Trey Lance, the former No. 3 overall pick, played the final 15 minutes and completed 4 of 6 passes for 21 yards. He was sacked twice and intercepted once.
QB Dak Prescott is scheduled to undergo surgery on his injured hamstring on Wednesday and is out for the season, owner Jerry Jones said .
The rest of the way for Dallas, Cooper Rush – and perhaps Trey Lance – will take over while Dak rehabilitates himself for a return in 2025.

Lance, who some believed would become the long-term answer for the San Francisco 49ers, also ran three times for 17 yards. Sunday marked his first regular-season appearance since being acquired by the Cowboys in 2023.
The Texans are looking to rebound after blowing a 16-point first-half lead against the Detroit Lions on Sunday night.
