PFFs top running backs in 2025 NFL draft

With the Indianapolis Colts in their bye week, we take a look at the 2025 NFL draft with Pro Football Focus' top safeties.

For a closer look at some of the Colts' other positions of need we previewed and top prospects, follow the links below.

Jonathan Taylor is under contract through 2025, but strengthening that position should be on GM Chris Ballard's radar.

For one, in today's NFL, where many teams have a secondary running back they can lean on to take some of the workload off the primary back's shoulders, the Colts don't really have one.

When available, Taylor plays the majority of the offensive snaps each week. It's pretty common for backup Trey Sermon to play five or fewer snaps in a game and Tyler Goodson not even see the field. This is a huge workload for Taylor week in, week out.

In addition, there is no great danger in the passing game at this position. Catching and blocking passes is not what Taylor values, and to put it simply, when Taylor isn't out there, there is less playmaking ability on the field.

There have been instances where having that element out of the backcourt has seemed to be of great benefit to Shane Steichen's offense and he has tried to incorporate the current full-backs, but the consistency hasn't been there, resulting in this one Offensive element could have been missing.

With Taylor's contract expiring after the 2026 season, it wouldn't be a bad idea to already have a backup plan on the roster in case he ends up somewhere else at that point. After all, it's the GM's job to plan ahead.

Given that the Colts still have Taylor, the team doesn't necessarily need to make an early pick at the position, but they should definitely bolster the depth.

With all of that said, let's take a look at Trevor Sikkema's top running backs in the 2025 draft class. In parentheses is the player's overall ranking on Sikkema's big board.
