As the Jacksonville Jaguars' search for a new head coach is underway, the question is, what would quarterback Trevor Lawrence want in a new hire?
Admittedly, Lawrence said he would naturally have a preference for an offensive player given his position and likes the idea of implementing an offensive system that can continue for years to come as the two grow together.
However, Lawrence's desire for the qualities he wants in this role goes much deeper.
“There are a lot of things” Lawrence said Thursday. “But as a leader, you want the right person to be the right leader and the right voice for your team and shape that culture.
“Just being a strong team – mentally and physically, that can withstand the ups and downs of a season.” I think that was something we did great two years ago, but for some reason we haven't been able to do that this year .”
So far, the Jaguars have fielded 10 interview requests with a good mix of both offensive and defensive players.
As for Lawrence's thoughts on any of these specific candidates, he didn't have any specific insights on any individual candidate, but said it appears the organization is doing “all the right things” and trying to interview all of the top candidates in this hiring cycle .
Lawrence believes owner Shad Khan and GM Trent Baalke value his opinion and that conversations have been had regarding the Jaguars' head coaching situation. Although Lawrence reiterates that he is the quarterback and doesn't want to “cross boundaries” or do more than his own job.
Of course, it depends on the plan, whether it's an offensive or defensive player, but finding the right person for the job will also be a crucial element to help Jacksonville get back into it on and off the field to get the track.
“I think from a leadership standpoint, it's just a guy that's going to instill that culture, whether it's an offensive coach or a defensive coach,” Lawrence added. “That toughness on our team and just knowing that It doesn't matter when we play, who we play against, we just have to recognize the ball and beat everyone. And just a strong team that other teams don’t want to play against.”
