Former Saints QB Teddy Bridgewaters HS team advances amid controversy

Teddy Bridgewater ignites the Miami Northwestern Bulls with another dominant playoff win – and an imminent trip to the state semifinals in the high school 3A competition against Cypress Lake. But the former New Orleans Saints quarterback's success as a high school ball coach hasn't come without controversy.

For one thing, Bridgewater is publicly seeking a return to the NFL. The new generation of quarterbacks doesn't inspire much confidence, and a veteran with his experience could be in high demand this spring. If Bridgewater feels he has unfinished business at the pro level, he could step away from the coaching staff to pursue a Super Bowl ring if the right opportunity presents itself.

But something else? Miami Northwestern was investigated by police for allegedly using an ineligible player. Crosstown rival Miami Central lost nine games this season (including a win over Bridgewater's team) because of a similar offense. No verdict has been made yet, but this could make or break Bridgewater's season at his alma mater.

Given the drama and politics that have followed high school football in the past, a situation like this could be disastrous. We will keep an eye on developments and hope for the best for Bridgewater. He has found success and new fans everywhere he has played and coached, including in New Orleans, and it would be a great story if he could lead his high school team the distance in his first year as coach. We'll just have to wait and see if he gets there. Their next game is tentatively scheduled for Friday, November 29th.
