The Arizona Cardinals her 2024 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. He is selected for this honor by all NFL teams.
It is an award that recognizes both outstanding achievements as a player on the field and in the community.
What did McBride do?
The Cardinals made this public in their announcement of the McBride award.
McBride has had great success on the field and in the community this year. He took part in the team's 22nd tournament last monthnd The annual Feed the Hungry event provides Thanksgiving dinner to hundreds of Arizonans escaping homelessness, addiction and poverty. On Oct. 15, McBride also participated in a STEM “Salute to Service” event at Tillman Middle School, where he taught students about inertia and gravity from a film study perspective.
He has also contributed to the Cardinals' ongoing push to expand the game of flag football for girls. In June, McBride hosted and instructed about 100 girls from four high school girls flag football programs in Arizona during a series of agility drills and competitions. In September, he had the honor of officiating the coin toss for the first-ever Cardinals Girls High School Flag Football Game of the Week, which was broadcast live nationally on Arizona's Family Sports.
McBride continued to be involved in the community during the offseason. In July, he returned to his hometown of Fort Morgan, CO to host his second annual free youth camp. As part of the annual camp, McBride provides mentorship and skills training to his hometown's next generation of players. In March, he hosted the team's eighth annual Tackle Reading Day, where he read and donated books to over 650 underserved Valley elementary students.
McBride also traveled to Poland on an nfl-USO tour in March. The trip lasted four days and visited six different military bases and hundreds of troops. There, he watched military equipment demonstrations, took part in an Army combat fitness test and competed in a Madden gaming tournament — all while conducting meet-and-greets and sharing meals with service members. A special moment on the trip was when McBride met Arizona National Guard soldiers, all of whom were die-hard Cardinals fans.
During McBride's breakout season in 2023, he made a big impression on others. Last December, he hosted “A Catch For The Holidays,” which invited ten students from Bernard Black Elementary School in Phoenix to shop at SCHEELS. Each child received a $1,000 gift card from McBride to use in the store. He was joined by a dozen of his Cardinals teammates at the event, making it a truly memorable moment for all of the students. In November 2023, McBride attended the annual Teen Thanksgiving Dinner at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Scottsdale. He first spoke to the group and then served Thanksgiving dinner before breaking bread with the group of underserved teenagers.
McBride participated in an evening of equine therapy and fun with 30 survivors from the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) in November 2023 as part of the nfl's Salute to Service initiative. At the event, he helped the survivors ride and groom the horses before enjoying a meal together. In September 2023, McBride attended a birthday party at Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he played games with patients and enjoyed desserts to celebrate their birthdays. The visit to Phoenix Children's was McBride's second in a three-month period, as he visited pediatric patients at the bedside in June. McBride consistently and proudly represents the Cardinals at a variety of events.
