Kyren Williams has struggled with ball security over the past two seasons, but that issue has become even more concerning over the last four weeks. He has fumbled it four times since Week 9, including twice in Sunday's loss to the Eagles.
Sean McVay didn't let Williams get away from him after either of his two fumbles, and it doesn't sound like anything will change in the running back rotation. McVay told reporters Wednesday that he has had conversations with Williams about his mistakes and he expects him to bounce back.
He also confirmed that Williams will remain the starter ahead of Blake Corum.
“They're definitely having these conversations and understanding that it's about being able to correct,” he said. “In my opinion, negative experiences without lessons lead to a loss of morale. It's really important to have lessons and be able to apply them. Kyren [Williams] is so conscientious. In many cases he is a great competitor. That's one of his best qualities that you say, “When you did that, we want to understand what a great job these defenses do in attacking the football.” Where do we make ourselves vulnerable and what can we do to protect ourselves? to give the best chance to gain as many yards as possible without potentially giving up the football? I trust him to move forward. He was always a guy who was mentally strong. He was able to respond and I think that will continue to be reflected in the future.”
It was a disappointing season for Williams after he averaged 5.0 yards per carry and a league-best 95.3 yards per game in 2023. This year, he's averaging just 4.0 yards per carry and 74.7 per game, and he's already fumbled five times, three times last year.
It's clear that McVay has complete trust in his workhorse, but at some point Williams has to cut out the costly fumbles.
