The San Francisco 49ers could travel across the Atlantic to play a game in the 2025 season.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL MediaThe NFL announced Friday that the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars will all play international games next season. The Jets and Browns will play at Tottenham Stadium while the Jaguars will play at Wembley Stadium. Dates and times will be announced with the NFL schedule sometime in May.
Pelissero also noted that the NFL can schedule up to eight international games and that both Madrid and Berlin will host games in 2025. That leaves the door open for the 49ers to explore other opportunities overseas, although teams for those games have not yet been announced.
San Francisco is scheduled to play the Jaguars and Browns next year, putting them in position to play in one of those games in London.
However, it is likely that the teams announced Friday will be the home team in those matchups, taking the Jaguars off the table. The 49ers are scheduled to host Jacksonville at Levi's Stadium.
However, their match against Cleveland remains as it is an away game for the 49ers. The Browns entered San Francisco's schedule with both teams finishing in last place in their respective divisions.
The 49ers have not played an international match since 2012, when they played the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium. That year, the Jags posted a 42-10 record.
Given the weak schedule, the 49ers could be forced by the NFL to travel internationally, especially since San Francisco has a strong fan base in England.
