Justin Kluivert Record breaking strikers penalty masterclass for Bournemouth

Penalty number one (3 minutes)

Kluivert only had to wait three minutes before he had his first chance to score from twelve meters.

There was controversy over the decision as Wolves boss Gary O'Neil believed Evanilson had handled the ball before running into the penalty area, only to be brought down by Toti Gomes.

The incident was referred to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but the decision stood.

Kluivert continued to stare at home goalkeeper Jose Sa before sending the keeper the wrong way, causing the ball to travel to Sa's left and into the bottom corner.

“The first thing I do is stop and look at the goalkeeper. What is he doing?” said the frontman.

Penalty number two (18 mins)

Kluivert's next penalty came frantically 15 minutes later, at which point the score was 2-1 to Bournemouth.

The VAR played its role again, prompting the on-field referee Peter Bankes to look at the action on a pitchside monitor to see that Sa had kicked Evanilson in the ankle after a violent first touch of the ball from the goalkeeper.

This time Kluivert – to use his words – “switched off” the ball in the opposite direction, to Sa’s right.

Penalty number three (74 mins)

With two penalties already converted, Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola admitted he was unsure whether Kluivert should take the third part of the Cherries' game, which was again awarded after a foul by Sa.

“The third goal I thought maybe he wasn't the one to take it, but I didn't want to be the one to tell him,” said Iraola, who had seen Kluivert first-hand as he played for Valencia against their opponents Rayo Vallecano scored in April 2023.

“Every time you take another penalty it becomes more difficult. I wasn't entirely sure if we should allow him to shoot the third, but it was difficult to take him down. I suffered against him in Spain, I remember that.”

“The first penalty gives the goalkeeper some information. Justin had two different approaches in the first two and he was very good in the third, he was full of confidence.”

Kluivert fired his third penalty past Sa and Bournemouth took the three points and moved up to 11th in the table.

“He doesn’t know what I’m going to do, I waited and he chose me,” Kluivert said. “It’s that simple.”
