Mbappe's move to Real Madrid dominated the headlines from the start.
The months of speculation, the fact that Paris St-Germain had to let him go for free, the astronomical wages, the hype and expectation.
And now the French striker is struggling to settle into this superstar team.
“We didn't see the best of Mbappe tonight,” former Real midfielder Steve McManaman said on TNT Sports.
“Tonight they needed Mbappe and he flattered to deceive. The Madrid press will be ruthless because he didn’t deliver again when he needed to.”
“Madrid is going through a difficult phase and the big players are not performing. All the baggage surrounding Mbappe makes it even worse. This year they’re really, really struggling.”
Mbappe has not yet found his feet and questions remain about his position and how he can get the best out of him and Vinicius Jr, who plays a similar role in the same team.
Since Vinicius Jr. was out due to injury, Mbappe was still unable to make a name for himself. But his teammates remain confident that he can perform.
“Kylian is a wonderful player, but the pressure is enormous,” said Bellingham.
“The penalty is not the reason why we lost the game. Kylian can hold his head high and I know for sure that he will bring many more great moments to this club.”
