Taylor Fritz will attempt to make history at the 2024 US Open while claiming the first American men's Grand Slam title in 21 years. However, he has a difficult task ahead of him as he has to prevail against world number 1, Jannik Sinner.
Fritz came to this tournament as the top seeded American, but never made it past the quarterfinals at any Grand Slam. He eventually made the breakthrough, becoming the first American to reach a Grand Slam final since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009. A win by Fritz on Sunday would be the first since Roddick won the US Open in 2003.
It was no easy task for Fritz to reach the title fight He had to beat fellow American Frances Tiafoe in a five-set semifinal to move forward. Fritz won the first three games, but his opponent quickly found his rhythm and it soon became a hard-fought battle.
Tiafoe won two of the first three sets, but a 31-shot rally in the fourth set was the turning point. Fritz won that rally and it seemed to give him more energy. Meanwhile, Tiafoe was slowly running out of gas. Fritz won 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and said facing Tiafoe in the semifinals gave him a boost of confidence.
“To be honest, I don’t think I’ll end up in a more stressful situation than I was [Friday] than playing in a final,” said Fritz. “I think today was a lot more stressful for me than the final.” “I just feel good,” said Fritz. “I feel like I'm going to play really well and win.” If I play good tennis, I think that level is good enough to win.

Fritz was also boosted by a quarterfinal win over No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev.
Fritz and Sinner are 1-1 all-time, but both meetings took place in Indian Wells, so this will be their first meeting at a major.
“I always played well against Jannik,” said Fritz. “He hits, he hits the ball big. Very strong ball hitter, but I feel like I always hit the ball very well from his ball.”
Sinner has been the one to beat all season and is 5-0 in tour-level finals this calendar year. He won his first major title in January at the Australian Open, which, like the US Open, is played on hard courts.
The Italian star booked his ticket to the title match at Flushing Meadows after a chaotic 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over No. 25 Jack Draper, who won 15 straight sets before the semifinals had won.
The competition in New York largely didn't bother Sinner this week. He only lost two sets, including his first set against unranked American Mackenzie McDonald, where he was broken several times. He sorted out the situation well and won 13 consecutive victories as the tournament progressed. His biggest competition came in the quarterfinals against one of his biggest hardcourt rivals, Daniil Medvedev, but even the Russian couldn't do much to slow him down.
“Big serve, very solid player from the back,” Sinner said. “He can hit hard, he can hit with rotation. He can shake up the game very well. He’s played a lot this year, so he’s got a lot of rhythm.”
