With the 113th edition of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of 2025 has officially opened. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is aiming for his second consecutive trophy in Melbourne, while Novak Djokovic aims for a record 11th Australian Open title with his former rival Andy Murray as coach.
If he can win this month, Djokovic would win his 25th Grand Slam trophy and break the tie with Margaret Court for most titles of all time. Sinner, who beat him in the semifinals last year, is on the other side of the group. Djokovic's path to meeting him is far from easy as he could face world No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals and potentially world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.
Djokovic brought in reinforcements in the form of Murray, who retired as a player last summer and agreed to coach the Serbian star at least until the Australian Open. They will make a more definitive decision about their future after the tournament.
Although it's only the first round, American star Frances Tiafoe has already given us a remarkable game. He won the first two sets against Arthur Rinderknech, but needed over four hours and a fifth set to advance to the next round.
On the women's side, Aryna Sabalenka is on a mission to win her third straight Australian Open and she has plenty of momentum as she closed out 2024 with her first US Open title. She's good on all surfaces, but she's extremely intimidating on hardcore. Sabalenka dropped just one combined set at the two major hard-court tournaments last season.
American star Coco Gauff's best result last year was reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open before losing to Sabalenka, and a rematch could potentially happen. Gauff's first-round match in Melbourne was against 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, who she beat in the first round of Wimbledon in 2023, but this time Gauff prevailed in straight sets.
Sabalenka and No. 2 Iga Swiatek have dominated women's tennis in recent years, but Gauff is one of the hottest players right now. Since her loss to Emma Navarro in the US Open round of 16, Gauff has won 19 of 21 matches, including victories at the China Open in Beijing, the WTA Finals in Riyadh and the United Cup.
