World number one Jannik Sinner edged out Alex de Minaur on the opening day of the ATP finals after Taylor Fritz defeated a furious Daniil Medvedev.
Sinner, playing on home soil in Turin, Italy, won 6-3, 6-4 to extend his perfect record against the seventh seed Australian.
The American Fritz had previously celebrated his 50th win of the year when he defeated Medvedev 6:4 and 6:3 at the start of the group stage of the season-ending tournament.
“I'm super happy with my performance today,” said Fritz, who reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open in September.
Fourth-placed Medvedev made seven double faults in a tight opening set in the Ilie-Nastase group, including two consecutive ones that gave Fritz the set point.
To cap off a disastrous service game, the Russian double-faulted again and reacted angrily to being behind by smashing his racket against his seat and the floor.
At the start of the second set, Medvedev earned his first break point of the game, but hit his backhand return into the net.
Further break points were not converted by either player before the 27-year-old, fifth seed Fritz, took advantage of his third goal and landed a false lob on the baseline.
A disgruntled Medvedev then received a point penalty after he destroyed a pitchside microphone by throwing his bat.
