Novak Djokovic to play Brisbane International before Australia Open

Novak Djokovic will play at the Brisbane International before starting his bid to win his 25th Grand Slam at Melbourne's Australian Open in January.

The Brisbane tournament, which runs from December 29th to January 5th, is one of the final warm-up events before the start of the Australian Open on January 12th.

“I’m looking forward to starting my Australian swing at the Brisbane International and competing at Pat Rafter Arena again,” Djokovic said.

“I look forward to experiencing the incredible support of the Australian fans and making this tournament an unforgettable experience.”

With 99 ATP titles to his credit, Djokovic is aiming to become only the third man in the Open era to win 100 career titles, joining American Jimmy Connors (109) and Switzerland's Roger Federer (103).

On the field in Brisbane are Nick Kyrgios, defending champion Grigor Dimitrov and Holger Rune.

Djokovic Andy Murray appointed as his coach for the Australian Open last month.

The former British number one was beaten four times by Djokovic in the Australian Open final.

An exact date for when Murray will take up his coaching role has not yet been set, but BBC Sport has been told the Scot has no plans to be in Brisbane with Djokovic at this time.

Djokovic reached the semi-finals of the Australia Open earlier this year, where he lost to eventual winner Jannik Sinner.
