New Zealand in Sri Lanka Lockie Ferguson takes hat trick in dramatic second T20

Lockie Ferguson took a hat-trick and Glenn Phillips took three wickets in the final over as New Zealand defended 108 and won a low-scoring second T20 against Sri Lanka at Dambulla.

The hosts needed just eight from the last over but off-spinner Phillips ensured that opener Pathum Nissanka, who had scored 52 off 51 balls, caught the second ball long-on on a slow, turning pitch.

Matheesha Pathirana was stumped for a golden duck on the next ball and after Sri Lanka conceded a single, Maheesh Theekshana was caught on the penultimate ball with six runs needed.

Earlier, fast bowler Ferguson dismissed Kusal Perera with the last ball of his first over and followed it up with the wickets of Kamindu Mendis and Charith Asalanka at the start of his second over. In doing so, he became the sixth New Zealander to score a hat-trick in men's T20 tournaments.

He finished with 3-7 in two overs while Phillips took 3-6 from 1.5 overs.

New Zealand's total was the lowest they have ever defended in a men's T20 tournament.

They struggled throughout their own batting innings, losing regular wickets and being bowled out in 19.3 overs as Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wahindu Hasaranga took 4-17.

Opener Will Young made 30 from 32 balls and after the rest of the top six were sent off for single-figure scores, the Black Caps were boosted by 19 from Mitchell Santner and 24 from all-rounder Josh Clarkson.

The result means the two-match T20 series ends 1-1. A three-match one-day international series begins on Wednesday.
