WWE's main roster currently includes nine championships. At SummerSlam on August 3, four new champions were crowned in a show that set the stage for the rest of 2024.
King and Queen of the Ring tournament winners Gunther and Nia Jax successfully competed for the World Heavyweight Championship and WWE Women's Championship, respectively, while LA Knight and Bron Breakker became main roster champions for the first time.
The biggest story of SummerSlam was the match between WWE Undisputed Champion Cody Rhodes and Solo Sikoa, but it had less to do with the title and more to do with its implications. Roman Reigns returned for the first time since losing to Rhodes at WrestleMania 40, setting up Solo Sikoa to set the stage for a major Bloodline vs. Bloodline feud.
As 2024 reaches the halfway point, take a look at who holds all the championships on the WWE main roster.
Undisputed WWE Championship: Cody Rhodes (defeated Roman Reigns on April 7, 2024)
Rhodes' long journey to winning the championship, which had eluded his legendary wrestling family, ended on the second night of WrestleMania 40 when he defeated Roman Reigns. Rhodes fell short against Reigns at WrestleMania 39, but gained revenge a year later by overcoming the Bloodline Rules and ending Reigns' 1,316 days as champion.
World Heavyweight Championship: Gunther (defeated Damian Priest on August 3, 2024)
Gunther's remarkable career on the main roster continues. The longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history used his King of the Ring tournament victory to successfully challenge Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. Gunther's victory is slightly marred by Finn Balor's betrayal of his leader Priest on Judgment Day. Nevertheless, “The Ring General” will take his world title to his old stomping grounds of Germany, for the first WWE Bash in Berlin PPV.
Women's World Championship: Liv Morgan (defeated Becky Lynch on May 25, 2024)
Morgan embarked on a self-proclaimed “revenge tour” after suffering an injury at the hands of Rhea Ripley – and vowed to win her the women's world title. After injuring Ripley in a backstage altercation, Morgan turned her attention to Becky Lynch after “The Man” won the vacated title in a battle royal. The two met at King and Queen of the Ring, with Morgan taking the win after an unintentional interference from Dominik Mysterio. “Dirty Dom” arrived late in the match and pushed a chair into the ring to assist Lynch, but Morgan DDT'd Lynch into the chair instead and hit her Oblivion finisher for the win.
WWE Women's Championship: Nia Jax (defeated Bayley on August 3, 2024)
Jax is WWE Women's Champion for the second time in her nine-year professional wrestling career. Jax won the Queen of the Ring tournament in May, earning himself a shot at the title against Bayley at SummerSlam. Jax overwhelmed the underdog champion for most of the match. When Bayley finally gained the upper hand, Jax found crucial help from her new ally. Tiffany Stratton teased her about cashing in her Money in the Bank briefcase, which allowed Jax to land a decisive blow and become champion.
Intercontinental Championship: Bron Breakker (defeated Sami Zayn on August 3, 2024)
Breakker didn't allow himself to be fended off a second time. The former NXT Champion failed to defeat Zayn in the Intercontinental Title match at Money in the Bank, but prevailed over the struggling champion in a brief rematch at SummerSlam. Breakker defeated Zayn with two spears to claim the Intercontinental title just over three months into his rookie main roster year.
US Championship: LA Knight (defeated Logan Paul on August 3, 2024)
It's taken Knight more than half his life, but he's finally a WWE main roster champion. Knight defeated Logan Paul in a thrilling match to secure the US Championship. Knight broke out in 2023 but has yet to win a main roster singles title 21 years into his pro wrestling career. Knight countered a shot from Paul with a decisive BFT for the pinfall.
World Tag Team Championship: JD McDonagh & Finn Balor (defeated The Awesome Truth on June 24, 2024)
Amid the turmoil of Judgment Day, caused largely by Liv Morgan's constant harassment of Dominik Mysterio, the group scored a major victory. After being “saved” by Mysterio, Morgan helped Judgment Day by manipulating R-Truth into giving McDongah and Balor a title shot against Truth and The Miz. Morgan then distracted and attacked Truth, setting the stage as McDonagh and Balor captured the titles on Raw.
WWE Tag Team Championship: Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga (won August 2, 2024)
The bloodline is gold once again. One thing that previously separated Sikoa and Reigns' versions of The Bloodline was the lack of tracks from the new group. Fatu and Tonga made things right by defeating #DIY and becoming WWE Tag Team Champions the last SmackDown before SummerSlam. In the final sequence, Fatu successively hit Johnny Gargano with a pop-up Samoan drop, a jump-up moonsault and an Impaler DDT to end the match.
WWE Women's Tag Team Championship: Isla Dawn & Alba Fyre (defeating Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill on June 15, 2024)
While the Clash at the Castle was a bad night for Piper Niven and Drew McIntyre in front of their hometown fans in Scotland, the fans saw a crowning moment for the locals as Dawn and Fyre emerged from a triple threat match against champions Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill emerged and the team of Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark with the titles. Belair and Cargill were protected by not taking the fall, and fans had a nice moment watching some locals take gold on the main roster for the first time in their careers.
