'Spin bowling has evolved' - Sairaj Bahutule elaborates on scope of spinners in T20 format

The third T20I of the ongoing series between South Africa and India will be played at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday, November 13, with Proteas in the previous game as the batting unit failed to fire. Now the winner of the last upcoming duel will ensure that he does not lose the series.

In the meantime, cricket-players/sairaj-bahutule/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Sairaj Bahutulewho is currently with Men in Blue as interim bowling coach for the ongoing series against the Proteas, feels that the role of spinners in the white-ball format, especially in T20Is, has changed significantly. Reflecting on how the spinners bowled in the second encounter while defending a tenuous target at St. George's Park, Gqeberha, Bahutule further explained the actual role of a spinner in this format of the game.

“Spin bowling has evolved. You have to be brave, you have to be courageous. 24 balls is something they really need to understand, that every ball is an event. The last game I think was very good as far as our bowling is concerned.” “The players, the fielders and the bowlers did a great job in defending 124 runs,” Bahutule said in a video posted by BCCI.

The 51-year-old also feels that there is very little to teach the squad in terms of skills as most of them have extensive experience in the Indian Premier League and international games. According to Bahutule, it helps the coaching staff not to make too many changes and let the players play to their strengths.

“I think they are experienced players. You have played a lot of IPL and international cricket. But from our side, we try to keep it very simple and make sure they play to their strengths and to the best of their ability,” Bahutule added.

“The entire execution, whatever was asked of us, has been done and I think they are looking forward to the third T20 and hope that we get the series on track,” concluded the Mumbai-born.

Nobody thinks 124 can be defended, but we came pretty close: Hrishikesh Kanitkar

Now India's interim batting coach cricket-players/hrishikesh-kanitkar/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Hrishikesh Kanitkar has said that all the players have great confidence due to the game preparation and awareness required especially in the 20-over format.

“Nobody normally thinks 124 or anything like that can be defended, but we got pretty close. It's all about the decisions you make. The areas where you look to hit the big shots. The balls you choose to hit the big shots. “So the conversations revolve around these things,” Kanitkar said.

They (the players) are all confident in the way they play. You have played a lot of T20 cricket. They know the intricacies of the T20 game,” he concluded.
