Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is still believed to be interested in coaching in 2025. According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Jacksonville Jaguars could be a team that could be particularly interesting for the legendary coach.
Belichick hasn't practiced since parting ways with the Patriots in January. He was passed over in the first wave of head coach hiring. Since then he has kept busy, appearing on several television shows and giving lectures at clinics.
“Belichick definitely has his eye on this opening in Jacksonville,” Russini continued . “This is an organization that has a lot of respect for Belichick. You already have a good relationship. … When you think about what they are looking for and needing there, it starts to make sense. This is a team looking for structure. They are looking for good situational football. They are looking for a coach who can maximize his talent, especially on defense. They have solid to good guys on defense.
“The things they’re looking for make sense. But the question I will have about how the Belichick situation will work is what the power dynamic will be. Will he get the keys to the castle? If they give him unilateral control, allow him to do that, why wouldn’t he go there?”
Of course, this would all depend on Doug Pederson being fired and the team offering Belichick the job.
It's a hypothetical situation with lots of interesting storylines. For one thing, Mac Jones is currently the Jaguars' backup quarterback. Belichick spent a first-round draft pick on Jones in 2021 in an attempted Patriots rebuild that failed.
But would Belichick actually be okay with not having full control of the team in terms of personnel? It would be one of the biggest stories of 2025 if things played out like this.
