The New England Patriots after Sunday's 28-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
It was essentially a move at the cornerback position as the team announced the release of veteran defensive back Marco Wilson and the activation of second-year cornerback Alex Austin.
Wilson was claimed off waivers by the Patriots in December 2023 and largely served as a rotation option behind Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones and Marcus Jones.
He struggled during his limited appearances with the team, and it was always likely he wouldn't last when Austin returned from his ankle injury. The 2023 seventh-round draft pick from Oregon State was sidelined for eight games.
Therefore, he should strive to get back into the game on defense.
When he arrived in New England at the end of last season, he showed strong improvement with nine tackles, two pass deflections and one interception in just five games for the team.
The Patriots are confident that Austin's version will once again provide more firepower for the struggling defense.
